In my thesis I will approach direct democracy from a service design perspective, focusing on co-creation. Oh my, that’s a lot of things. So how am I structuring my content? I currently plan 5 big sections:
- Introduction: this will include project goals and definitions
- Co-creation: a review of the literature around co-creation. You’ll be surprised…
- Direct democracy: an introduction to the Swiss system of direct democracy through two types of analysis: an organizational view using the Star Model, and a service design view using a blueprint visualization.
- Case studies: I have been talking with Swiss organizations, to see how, if at all, they make use of co-creation efforts. I also plan to include a few good international examples as best practices.
- A commercial model: after being equipped with what co-creation means, what direct democracy is, and what companies in the market are doing, I will attempt to create a model model for commercial organizations, mirroring the best elements of direct democracy, while mitigating its shortcomings.
So, what do you think? I start rather theoretical, then explore the current state of the focus of my thesis in detail, than I look at practical implementations in the market, to arrive at a model that combines all of these. Sounds about right to me, but maybe you have a better idea?
By the way, I will use the above sections as the main categories on this blog.
*UPDATE*
As my first community feedback, Frédéric Sauzet (head of Business Incubation Center at CERN) pointed out the need for a field experience, as a reality check for my model. Indeed I am planning to do this, but am still searching for the company. So i will add the two optional sections that I will add if time and energy permits:
5a: a survey among Swiss citizens, aiming to identify their views on co-creation with companies, in light of the political culture of co-creation they were socialized in
5b: Implementing my proposed model with a company: first discussions and a reality check of the model
